Thanks to all of you visiting the BFFI 2009, it was the best turnout that I have seen and was a very important show for us as it was our first outing with Partridge. We met lots of trade, international fly dressers and customers all after answers about the future of Partridge. A few considered below but you can also visit www.partridge-of-redditch.co.uk to stay ahead with new patterns and updates. In the meantime, please feel free to ask us your most important questions about hooks!

Q: Will you be stopping any hook patterns? We heard that SALAR doubles will be discontinued

A: We are not going to change anything and we will certainly continue SALAR hooks, they are a top seller. Infact I would go further and say that we have already added new sizes of a few hooks CS14/2 doubles is now available in 13 and 14’s and X2 trebles are now available in 14, 16, 18 and 20’s in black, silver and gold

Q: Why have you stopped producing the SHR pattern?

A: The CZ and SHR patterns are identical but were in different sizes. We have decided to bring the range together under CZ pattern and extend the range - they are now available in 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20’s

Q: Is it true that there will be a new Klinkhamer pattern available in 2009

A: Yes, all sizes are now available in gold (some folks are asking for silver too)

The bird has returned to the nest as UK-based FishingMatters acquires Partridge of Redditch from Mustad.

Partridge of Redditch has been under the wing of Mustad, Norway, for the past thirteen years, but this week returned to British hands.

Partridge has 130 years of heritage and can be credited with the invention of modern fly hook manufacture. Wet and dry fly classics are the benchmark hook for fly dressing and Partridge produce the preeminent salmon hook. Sadly in recent years the UK market has been starved of stock with the result that many retailers have sought other brands looking for better stock support - this situation will of course change, with the UK becoming the new distribution centre for Partridge products once again. Fishing Matters has a proven track record of supporting the trade and takes pride in offering a high level of customer service and product compliance.

The international market remains very important to Partridge as do their retailers and distributors so the Fishing Matters team will be working through the markets in the coming months to review the business to better understand their different needs and prepare for future development of both products and business.

Fishing Matters’ spokesman Mark Hamnett explained that the Partridge business fits strategically with their existing portfolio of VARIVAS and OWNER as there is little or no duplication of products, enabling them to offer a comprehensive range to UK Game, Carp, Predator and Saltwater anglers alike. “We are arranging for the transfer of stock form Gjøvik, so that UK retailers will be able to get product into their shops in time for the new fly tying season. We have already started to contact existing Partridge stockists and international distributors to ensure that we maintain the continuity of delivers to the trade so that no one loses out in the transition period.”

Featured in last month’s Trout and Salmon Magazine - these really are amazing! They are the latest innovation in tapered leaders – with the sole aim of providing the fly-fisher with even more delicate presentation and ideal turn-over.
VARIVAS Yamame Leaders are 12ft long with a unique profile - 55% butt and a gradual taper over 28% with a relatively short point of 17%, they are available in 4X 5X 6X and 7X, and are ideal for use with the dry flies used on chalk streams.
Their unique flat butt gives additional suppleness for ease of knotting – the yellow-coloured butt and taper make these leaders highly visible to the fly-fisher while maintaining stealth with a clear point section. Produced from pure nylon, they are supple from butt to point and have no memory, making them ideal for delicate presentation.
For a low profile connection leader to fly line use one of our finest Marryat Braided Loops (2-5wt or 5-8wt) and tie the leader to the loop using a clinch or improved clinch knot. This will reduce the “slurp” as you lift off the water to cast and makes hinging at the loop impossible!

You can buy them on line at Lakeland Flytying (www.lakelandflytying.com) or Fly Fishing Tackle (www.fly-fishing-tackle.co.uk)

Before I mention that there is a fantastic special offer at Lakeland Fly Tying (www.lakelandflytying.com) on these lines let me make a couple of quick comments about what makes these lines so different to the rest of the pack.

Firstly they are specifically designed for fly-fishing at close quarters (unlike many of our competitors who believe that competition casting is the future of fly fishing!!), so are brilliant where the surroundings make a long back cast difficult. With a shorter head our lines need less distance to load the line so that close in presentation is easy - just remember that most fish not hooked at the end of a 40 yard cast!

Double Tapers are a must where the ultimate presentation is sought, here we offer a 22 yard line in 2 and 3 weight as well as 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 and 8 weight. Its worth mentioning that the taper for the two and three weights are quite different the classic line weights of four to eight, this is because such rods are usually shorter so need a sweet-spot that is closer to the front end.
Weight Forward lines are really useful in a breeze and where effortless and accurate casts are required over a longer distance. Our weight-forwards feature the Wind Block Taper which has been developed so as not to overload the blank but to still achieve the distance
All of our lines feature the renowned AIRS Hollow Nylon Single Monofilament Core, making VARIVAS lines 20% more buoyant than other floating lines and because of VARIVAS technology have virtually no memory and have Double-Flex Hard Coating greatly improves buoyancy, durability, suppleness and slickness so that the line will whistle through the rings with the greatest of ease. All lines are avalable in both Sand and Orange
